SANCTUARY
The contents of this page are a report I prepared for a presentation on Tommy Thompson Park (also known as the Leslie Street Spit), including photo-documentation, culminating in a vision of its future expressed succinctly in an Instruction Piece with no written instructions. The unique phenomenon of the park is that it is a place where things lost or discarded can find their way again. The very materials that comprise the peninsula—dredged dirt, debris, and rubble—are reborn as wildlife habitat and recreational parkland. The ephemeral human interventions scattered throughout the park, often taking the form of stacked rocks, are manifestations of the instinct to sort disarray into order, create coherence from chaos, and eke out a little sign of one’s having-been-here. “Think Tank 1: Awareness,” OCAD U, February-March 2018.
